History
Beginnings:
Kathryn Hexum has a B.A. in Liberal Arts from the University of Iowa with an emphasis in textiles, interior design, and secondary education. She first formed Kathryn Hexum Interiors in 1978 in Rochester, Minnesota, where she earned her ASID accreditation and specialized in construction design, custom cabinetry, interior finishes, and window coverings. Together with her husband, Rick, they designed and built luxury homes and developed various residential and commercial projects under the entities Peterson Richard and French, Kathryn Hexum (construction) Company (click here to article), and Schroeder Leverington.
KVH Hayward, Inc.:
In 2002, after a move to the Hayward area, Kathryn and Rick involved their children in opening a mid-priced Slumberland furniture business with a rustic lodge twist under the legal business name KVH Hayward Inc.. This entity also did business as Northpoint Design, a high-end interior design studio located within the building. In 2013, the franchise agreement ended with Slumberland and Retreat Home was created, with Kathryn designing a new store front. Beginning in January of 2019, ownership passed to their son, Ryan Hexum. In 2022, Kathryn returned to her roots via Kathryn Hexum Interiors as a freelance designer, specializing in construction design, custom cabinetry, interior finishes, and window coverings.
